Kimiidera was founded about 1,250 years ago during the Nara period and is a temple of the Thirty-Three Kannon Temples of the Western Provinces. It has also been selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots. Approximately 500 cherry trees, including Somei-Yoshino and Higanzakura, are planted on the grounds, and the Somei-Yoshino cherry tree in front of the main hall is a specimen tree designated by the Wakayama Regional Meteorological Observatory. The cherry blossoms that hang over the 231-step Musenzaka slope leading to the main hall, the historical buildings, the view of Wakanoura, and the cherry blossoms in the grounds enrich the hearts of all who visit. A cable car will begin operating in April 2022, making it easier for people with mobility issues to visit the temple.
