Chausu-dake, the main peak of the Nasu Mountain Range, is an active volcano with an elevation of 1,915m. You can take the ropeway up to the summit station at 1,684m. It takes about 50 minutes to climb from here to the summit. Since the mountain above the summit station is mostly rocky due to the active volcano, if you want to enjoy the autumn leaves, we recommend hiking to Ubagadaira. It takes about 1.5 to 2 hours round trip from the summit station. Please note that there are no toilets on either course except at the summit station. Also, during the autumn leaves season, if you take the first ropeway up, the temperature around the summit station can drop below 5°C, so you will need to prepare for the cold. There are many rocks underfoot, so we recommend sneakers at the very least, and trekking shoes or other light hiking shoes if possible.
